Dilworth, one of Charlotte's first streetcar suburbs

At the beginning of the Twentieth Century, the fast-growing city of Charlotte touted a population of only18,091.  The city government was supported by a mayor, a recorder, and a Board of Aldermen, which included seven members: one from each of the four wards of the city and three elected at large.

The first suburbs of Charlotte formed along the streetcar lines extending out from the city.  These suburbs expanded to the south and east of the city, included Dilworth, Elizabeth, Myers Park, Plaza Midwood.

Latta Park, known as the “pleasure resort” was at the southern end of the street car line.  Latta Park sat just outside the city limits and was known as the Dilworth community Charlotte NC.  Historic Dilworth, with its colorful park, boulevards, expansive mansions and inviting bungalow was Charlotte’s earliest “suburban” development.

Latta Park
Built in 1891 by entrepreneur and streetcar owner, Edward Dilworth Latta, whose home on East Boulevard was the showplace of turn-of-the-century Charlotte.  Until Latta’s departure from Charlotte in May, 1923, he played a pivotal role in the transformation of the city from a modest commercial center of 7,094 inhabitants in 1880 into an industrial and financial metropolis of Piedmont, NC in 1920, boasting a population of 46,338.  Today Charlotte's population is a hefty 895,995, with over 2.5 million in the Charlotte Metro region.

Gorgeous Dilworth Places of Worship

Historic Dilworth had not only fine residences, but also a race track, ball park, pavilion, lake and an industrial complex which included textile mills and a foundry.   Still today, the Nationally Registered neighborhood retains its residential charm while embracing lively adaptive reuse for commerce, galleries, restaurants and entertainment.

Debe,

This was a very lovely tour of the area. A nice piece of history as well. I didnot understand that Charlotte is such a big city. Somehow I thought it is a much smaller city. Thanks for the  lesson

Debe, This is a nice localism post.  Can you believe I've never been to Charlotte?  Well, that's not exactly true.  I fly in and out of there all the time and I love that airport, but I've never visited.  It's on my list and when I finally make it, first I'll check out all your great localism blogs to remember what I should see and then I'll call you and see if we can meet for coffee or lunch or something.

Keep writing.

Your blogs are great localism posts.  And yes, I could see video with each of these.  Refer to my last response to your comments about videos.  Have a great day.  I'm in Texas right now.
