Are You a Visionary or a Day-to-Day Multi-tasker

First of all, my definition of a Visionary is someone who looks ahead into the future. I didn't quite like the definition defined by Wikipedia. One of Merriam-Webster's definition said that it existed only in imagination. I didn't like that either.

My Vision is in front of me everydayWell, John Cannata of Frisco Texas mortgage brought this to my attention last week so I thought I'd share my opinion about it here on my blog. In one of our conversations, he mentioned that many of the real estate agents he interact with are typical day-to-day multi-taskers. But they are not necessarily "visionaries" - in the sense that these agents may not necessarily have or know the BIG PICTURE of what their future looks like.

Many times, most of us feel like "headless sprinting chickens": running around without real end in sight. We put out fires, and we work on the clients' files that need our attention RIGHT NOW. Before you know it, we are in April 2009. We look up to the visions and goals we set for 2009 back in December, they just become a part of our history book. Something we did "for fun" then.

While I understand that there are often times we need to work on what's important NOW, but we cannot forget our long-term vision - the plan that we have desired in our hearts. At the end of every business day, re-cap and make sure what you had taken care of each day geared you towards your long-term goal. If you haven't done at least one thing, make sure you do not stop until you have at least that one thing for your long-term plan. We must not forget the forest while we fight the small battles.

Become a Visionary rather than a day-to-day multi-tasker (that's my very nice way of you are a chicken running around with its head chopped off. Running around with no direction and path in mind). Even if you get there, do you really know you have "arrived" because you were too busy putting out fires day in and day out.

PS: Most people would think that they are Visionaries but the truth is not quite. If they were, we would see many more successful real estate agents. Just having a Vision or Business plan doesnt necessarily make you a Visionary. What you do daily towards it that really matters.

I, for one need to make sure I do what I preach! Constantly keeping tabs on myself.
