I am 100% serious when I tell you that we should consider having a thorough screening process from your referral networks. Dont just accept any referrals. It might be a nightmare more than a blessing. Most of us jump in joy when we receive a lead. But my recent experience from a referral source have made me re-think this whole referring business thing.
If you haven't read my previous post, you might want to see some challenges I encountered in Whose Client Is It Anyways? Some people just never quit. This loan officer - who found me on Active Rain gave me this lead to help our client find a home. This business relationship started back in mid-January. Fast forward 3 months, we are in escrow, working through some issues and trying to close. After his unacceptable phone call the first time (10 days ago), he called me wanting to discuss yet another challenge in the transaction.
I cordially returned his phone call to see what I could do to help. The conversation went on fine at first but took a very quick turn for the south within a few minutes. (I really start to think that this person has bad temper to begin with). So, he went back to screaming on the phone - actually worse than my 18-month old except that he used foul language in his conversation with me.
I tried to calm him down by asking him to do so. That only made it worse so he started yelling even louder. I gave him another warning about needing to terminate this phone call if he does not behave. (I feel like a mother needing to discipline a child). In the end, after 2 warnings, I told him I cannot continue this conversation because he was mis-behaving. Of course, I didn't think much about the language anymore - that's what I would expect him from here on out. I quickly called his loan processor to say that I would no longer do business or have any conversations with this person and I left it as that.
Well, this lesson really taught me this:
As much as I screen other good vendors to refer my clients to do business with, I will hereby also screen the person giving me business. I'm not joking about this.
When I googled his name, I found one horrible experience on a website that clearly described our (my client and I) experience.
I've been burnt and I don't need business that bad to have to endure such nasty unprofessionalism. So, for you out there: You can control whom you do business with. Make the full use of what you can or cannot do.
In the end, my client suffers and I really feel sorry for him. I still keep a positive attitude about this, continuously encouraging him throughout the transaction. The fact is that we have totally regretted doing business with this person - 3,000 miles away. We both agree we can't wait to get this hairy ball out of our hair and into our history book. I have to do alot of "repair" work for my first-time home buyer.
Referral Screening Really Go Both Ways. It does!
