Some years back I made a resolution to avoid an oft repeated expression, "I hate Mondays"...!!!
For the most part I have eliminated that expression from my vocabulary, however, it once in a while creeps back in...
During those infrequent moments, it helps if I recall some pleasurable moments from the past weekend...we live for the weekends, don't we...???
So as not to bore my readers with details of baseball practices, little league games, tournament tryouts, cancelled soccer games, softball ties, etc...I digress...
When I was a kid many moons ago, I owned ONE baseball glove, ONE wooden baseball bat (A Mickey Mantle model), ONE Phillies cap (wool), and a couple of very old, brown, dirty, grass stained baseballs...all of which I kept in the corner of our ONE car garage...The bat would fit across the handlebars of my balloon-tired bike with the glove dangling from the middle...!!!
Today...my youngest son, Jared, owns a really nice baseball equipment bag...costing as much as my entire baseball equipment collection...containing several nice white baseballs, batting gloves, at least a couple of fielding gloves, his favorite composite bat, maybe some underarmor, an extra cap or two or three, sweatbands, a practice donut, possibly an almost empty or partially full gatorade, a cup (not for the gatorade), and other assorted ESSENTIALS FOR PLAYING BASEBALL...
But here is the HOME RUN thought of this post...and this comes from reflecting on some games which I watched over this past weekend, and it comes under the heading of ADVICE TO LITTLE LEAGUE AND SOFTBALL COACHES...
Get your first basemen to use a FIRST BASE MITT...
I know, in softball especially, using this oversized glove at first base will result in several more outs per game and remove some of the boredom experienced by observers and athletes alike...
Have a great week...!!!
