This afternoon, I will be accompanying my youngest child, my seven year old daughter Ashley to
celebrate The Sacrament of Penance for her first time...!!!
For my non-Catholic friends, Penance, Reconciliation, or Confession, as it is sometimes known, is one of The Seven Sacraments that Catholics celebrate.
In recalling MY own first confession sixty years ago, I recall the element of fear very active in the process. I guess it was a healthy fear inasmuch as it emphasized the damage that sin does, and the offense to God that sin allows, and the eternal punishment that sin welcomes...!!!
This afternoon, when Ashley and I participate in this celebration, the focus will be on God's Love, Mercy, and Forgiveness...
Listen to the Act of Contrition Prayer that the children were taught:
My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against you, Whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with Your help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads to sin. Our Savior, Jesus Christ, suffered and died for us. In His Name, My God, have mercy.
What a beautiful prayer...full of innocence, truth, sincerity, hope, and purpose.
Another moving moment in the celebration will be when Father Marty, our Pastor, privately and individually invites each penitent with the words: "May The Lord be in your heart and on your lips so that you may know your sins and be truly sorry for them."
I think the emphasis shift, from punishment to God's forgiveness and God's Loving Mercy, is truly a glorious thing.
Some may disagree, and opt for a more ‘fire and brimstone' approach...
Be that as it may, we will attempt to focus on the Lord's Love for us, His willingness to forgive us, and His Mercy, which is limitless...!!!
God Bless Ashley, my family, and all who read this post...!!!
