Christian Real Estate Professionals : December 2010

My Reflections On This Year in Real Estate - By Lori Cofer, Realtor®

Winters Dusting Lori CoferToday, one day before the last day of the year 2010, I did what I have been doing pretty consistently this year.  I was out showing properties to a buyer.  Yes..there was snow. Lots of it as we had a blizzard yesterday.

As I look back at the Real Estate Market for me in Pullman Washington this year it has been pretty consistent for me.  Yes...I have worked hard...very hard.  But it is a labor of love for me.  I love what I do.  I love homes.  I love working with people.  So for me, it really is something I truly enjoy.  I have met some wonderful folks and had the great privilege of helping them with their real estate needs.  Many of which have become good friends.

As I look at my buyers this year I have to say I  been fortunate to work with some great buyers!   And fortunately, I continue to do so.  I have a few in escrow to start off the New Year in 2011 right.

And  I am proud to say that the sellers who have had sufficient time on the market to turn their homes, priced their homes to sell, and did their part in following suggestions and tips to market their home have SOLD.  Some have moved on to new parts of our world, others to new neighborhoods in Pullman.

I know many say 2011 might indeed be another challenging year, but I look forward to it!

A Man named Jesus

I'd thought be a little bold today about my Sunday God First post since it's the Sunday after Christmas (also the last Sunday for the year)...If you didn't know, I begin my first order of business here on Active Rain by writing my first post, called God First post every Sunday. Most of the time, I share with others how to conduct business and work your faith through your business, but today..... It will be a little different.

I recently had a deep conversation with a personal friend from college who is going through a divorce. This event hurt my husband and I deeply in part because Michael and I understand how precious a marriage is. As I think more about what our friend is going through, I realized one important part to the equation:

A marriage, often between 2 people may begin happy. But happiness can end really quick if there is not a substance that hold the 2 together. This substance, better yet, this person called Jesus could make a difference in a marriage because His presence can align priorities.

I dont want to dig too much about marriage and life and what you may feel about my opinion. However, I want to share with you my personal testimonial about how having Jesus changed my life and my perception on every aspect.

I am a new believer (2004) and wouldn't even come close to admitting that I'm a bible scholar. But one clear aspect I know is that life since knowing Jesus has been much better. I still have challenges and difficulties but I sure look at them with a different perspective.

I am a better real estate agent today because of a man named Jesus. While I'm not saying that I was "bad" or "evil" in my prior life and certainly do not imply those who do not believe in Him is this way.... everything I do, with or without supervision because I know whom I answer to. I serve with a different attitude, one for the love of others.

  • My faith guides me in everything I do.
  • My love for others transpired because He first loved me.
  • I learnt not to be disappointed in people, even those closest to me because my hope is placed in Him alone.

3:16 team REALTY came to me through a prayer session. Most people think it's John 3:16 but it's not. It is founded from 1 John 3:16 - Now that we know what Christ has done for us, we must do for one another. (I didn't know this scripture prior to this business name). Today, this business name serves me well.

Most of my family members are not Christians. The family dynamics because of what we believe can be challenging at times and here's what my Daddy said to me, "I dont want to be a Christian today because of all the things that I cannot do. But just as soon as I die, I will accept Jesus into my heart"...

My dad made that comment to me over 5 years ago. I can't stop thinking about it. I don't think he is right but I don't want to argue. I much prefer to lead by example.....

So, if my daddy were to read this, this is what I would tell him:

My life has certainly changed for good. Just by having Jesus in my life, things are so much better. I clearly work my priorities every day of my life. And the things you said you couldn't do? Well, I'm not that interested in doing them either because I know better. I love a life where I'm not threading in the grey areas. I love the authority over me and I gladly pay my taxes owed. I don't care for drinking and my focus is to nurture my son so he could be of service to others. Nope, he doesn't have to be an attorney or a doctor, I just want him to be what God has called him to be.

Life with Jesus seems to be somewhat in order and certainly one with unexplainable peace and joy that only can come from the Lord. Will I be sad, angry or disappointed? Most certainly. He didn't promise a life of roses but with Him, life certainly makes more sense.

I pray that all my family members will accept this man called Jesus in their own time.

This concludes yet another God First post, one I write every Sunday since I've started blogging. I'm not planning to stop.

I hope you will have a prosperous 2011 and see you at the top!!!

Scripture of the Week:

I came so that they may have life, and have it abundantly.

John 10:10

I begin my week here on Active Rain with my God First posts, written every Sunday once a week. My promise to you is that the messages I share will be day-to-day related, often times related to real estate. If these topics are important to you also, I'd love for you to subscribe to my blog.

God First posts every Sunday

Fran's Friday Forum...Merry Christmas To All And To All A Good Night...!!!

It's Christmas Eve and we just finished up with trying to revive an old ethnic recipe. My Mom, gone three years now, would have been proud, although our attempt produced oversized and irregularly shaped specimens...BUT...

That's not what Christmas is all about anyway...

It's recognizing Our Lord coming to Earth as man to show how much God loves us...

May ALL hear His message of Peace...!!!

Merry Christmas...!!!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year From Lori!

Wishing You and Yours a Very Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year!

And for many of my clients, I have an additional wish that you enjoy your first Holiday in Your New Pullman Home!  I will be thinking of each and every one of you!

And for those who have sold their homes this year and moved away, may your new life be as wonderful as you are!

With Love,
Lori

Are you the Barney Fife of Social Media?

When I was a kid, my grandfather would pick me up from school most days, and we would hang out all afternoon until my mom came to pick me up from his house. He would usually make me some macaroni and cheese, or some (rather amazing) home-style fries. While we were together, we’d watch TV, typically old shows that were in syndication, like “Gilligan’s Island”, or “Father Knows Best”. One of my favorites was “The Andy Griffith Show”, and I can still whistle the theme song pretty well, truth be told.

In case you’re not already familiar with the characters, Barney Fife was played by Don Knotts, and he was the bumbling deputy to the supremely calm sheriff Andy Taylor, played by Griffith himself. Along with his hilarious and goofy manner, one of the more memorable things about Barney was how he handled his firearm. As a law enforcement officer in tiny (and fictional) Mayberry, North Carolina, there was never much need for a gun, so Barney kept his bullet(s) in his front pocket. Despite some big talk, Barney was not that well-equipped in the courage department, either.

Needless to say, whenever he thought he might need to use it, he had a tough time getting his gun loaded quickly, and it made for some funny and clumsy slapstick comedy.

With Barney in mind, have you found yourself content to leave your bullets in your pocket? Are you using new media tools fully, or shying away from some stuff because it seems pointless or even scary? I can emphatically state that I felt less-than-thrilled about Facebook, Twitter, and even blogging before I started using them actively. Each of them has its benefits and drawbacks, of course, but they have each brought me real-world dollars, so I can’t ignore that.

A couple of quick words of general advice about using social media:

1. Be persistent. It may take time for your efforts to pay off. Set the appropriate expectations for yourself. If you stick with it, opportunities will likely surface.
2. Be yourself. Yes, really. It’s that simple. If you meet an online friend for the first time, and it feels like you’re meeting an old friend, you’re doing it right.
3. Don’t oversell anything. If you think of new media tools in terms of real-life networking, give some sincere thought to how often you “pitch” your services. No one wants to be “that guy” or “that lady” that people dread seeing or talking to because he/she is always working a business angle.

Social media has presented all of us with an interesting opportunity. In 1998, when I started my first website for my real estate business, people acted like it was a strange idea, and a waste of time. Since then, we’ve had many millions of dollars in sales from that site. I see the same pattern emerging today with new media tools. I still hear stuff like, “What good does being on Twitter do for you?” or “Why do I need a blog anyway?”. These are the same folks who will be kicking themselves (some already are) for not acting sooner and using the FREE online tools available to them for promoting their brand/business.

Don’t be a Barney. Be prepared when opportunities arise. Social media is one such opportunity.
